The Nova is a cinema open at the end of January 1997 in the center of Brussels, whose programming is dedicated to films and videos of independent productions. The Nova cinema is therefore not a commercial screen, it is a non-profit association managed by a collective of individuals working in a volunteer way. In fifteen years of existence, Nova has undoubtedly become the reference point, in Belgium, of alternative, unconventional or simply different approaches in the audiovisual field, its notoriety having transcended the borders of the country.
The Nova offers monthly programs based on thematic or event-driven lines, the idea of ​​which is to disseminate new and contemporary productions as well as to provide a platform for discussion in the broad sense. In this program you will find specific appointments such as "Open Screen", "Live Soundtracks", "TV Nova", "Nocturnes", "Ears Open", "Cineketje" ... Also, often through collaborations with external associations, special events. The Nova broadcasts as much of the length as means or short films of fiction, documentary or experimental that have no distribution in Belgium, or that are too "difficult" for the so-called commercial circuit.
Thanks to this programming work, the Nova has naturally become a small distribution house. And because his interest has always focused on the different workshops or production alternatives in the world, Nova has started to set up its own production structure.
But the Nova is also a place of conviviality open to other disciplines than the cinema. Pictorial, photographic and musical creations of the performances are presented regularly, if they have a relation with the image. Thus, in parallel with its programming and in close contact with it, the Nova regularly hosts meetings, debates, exhibitions, installations, performances, workshops, in its hall and its foyer-bar underneath The Microboutiek, but also DJ's, musicians ... and a heterogeneous public.
