FRICK - A long story
Frick on the trench ...
The origins of this Viennese bookstore date back to Johann Thomas Trattner, who was born around 1719 in Jahrmannsdorf
near Güns. As Waisenkind, he received an apprenticeship from relatives in the Buchdruckerei S. Miiller in Wiener
Neustadt, where he learned his trade and chose his motto: "Altius labore et favore", which means "empor by work and
favor".
Trattner was a man who always strove for more. Through a reformation of the book-printing art and always in the search
for privileges and monopolies, he created organizations, which even survived his life. Shortly before his death,
he conducted seven bookshops, five book-printing, 18 booksheets, and two paper factories. The Viennese book printer
was also able to print works by foreign-language authors, since this was made possible by the Austrian laws and the
financial-political view of his time.
And many other fricks ...
After a number of changing owners and managing directors, Frick is today a Viennese institution and Austrian
bookstore chain store with branches in Vienna, Upper Austria and Salzburg, including traditional locations such as
Wiener Kärntnerstrasse (former bookstore Georg Prachner) and Salzburg Höllrigl.
